The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of the most photographed spots in Japan. By 10 AM it is also one of the most crowded. Shoulder to shoulder, phones raised, the narrow path through the towering stalks reduced to a slow shuffle. This experience is built entirely around avoiding that version of it.

Departure is at 7:00 AM, when the light is still low and angled, pushing long shadows through the bamboo and catching the mist that sits in the Oi River valley most mornings. Your jinrikisha runner, trained and licensed in the traditional art of rickshaw pulling, meets you at the Arashiyama station plaza and sets off at a pace that lets you actually see things.

The bamboo grove comes first, and at this hour it is close to silent. The sound the stalks make when the wind moves through them, a deep hollow knocking, is something you only notice when there are fewer than twenty people around you. Your runner pauses here long enough for photographs that do not have strangers in them.

From there the route curves past the outer gardens of Tenryu-ji, a Zen temple whose raked gravel and sculpted pine garden have been maintained in essentially the same form since the 14th century. Then down to the Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Oi River, with the forested mountains of Arashiyama rising directly behind it in the kind of composition that looks like it was painted rather than real.

The final stop is a small riverside teahouse where you step down from the rickshaw, remove your shoes, and sit on tatami with a bowl of matcha and a wagashi sweet shaped like a seasonal flower. The city has not fully woken up yet. It is a genuinely peaceful way to start a day in Kyoto.
