Few places on earth carry the weight of Machu Picchu. Built at 2,430 meters above sea level, hidden from the Spanish conquest, and rediscovered only in 1911, it sits in the cloud forest like a question the Incas left unanswered. This ten-night package builds toward it properly, giving the journey the space it deserves rather than rushing you to the citadel and back.
You land in Cusco, the ancient Inca capital, now a city of baroque churches built directly on top of Inca stone foundations. The first day is intentionally slow. Altitude acclimatization is real at 3,400 meters, and the itinerary builds in a full rest day with a gentle guided walk through the San Blas neighborhood, where whitewashed walls and narrow cobblestone lanes hide some of the best artisan workshops in South America. Coca tea is your friend here.
On day three, a full day in the Sacred Valley opens up the landscape. The Pisac market is one of the most authentic in the highlands, overflowing with textiles, ceramics, and produce that locals actually buy. The Ollantaytambo fortress in the afternoon is a masterclass in Inca engineering, with massive stone terraces rising up the valley walls and a water channel system still functioning after five hundred years.
A side trip to Moray and Maras reveals two more layers of Inca ingenuity. The circular agricultural terraces at Moray created microclimates for crop experimentation. The salt ponds of Maras, still harvested by hand by local families, cascade down the hillside in thousands of small pools that catch the afternoon sun like broken mirrors.
Then the Vistadome train descends from the valley into cloud forest, following the Urubamba River as the vegetation thickens and the mountains close in overhead. You arrive in Aguas Calientes in the early evening, a small town that exists entirely because of the citadel above it.
Sunrise entry to Machu Picchu is non-negotiable. The morning mist sits in the valley below while the citadel emerges from cloud, stone by stone. Your guide walks you through the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the agricultural terraces while most visitors are still on the bus up. By the time the crowds arrive, you have already had the place to yourselves.
