Morocco doesn't ease you in. From the moment you land, the senses are at full volume. Saffron and cumin in the air. Mosaic tiles catching afternoon light. The call to prayer echoing off six-hundred-year-old walls.
Your first stop is Fez, the intellectual and spiritual heart of Morocco. A local guide takes you deep into Fez el-Bali, a medina so dense and ancient that getting slightly lost is part of the experience. Watch dyers work the famous tanneries from rooftop terraces, duck into a 14th-century madrasa, and eat harira soup at a stall that's been in the same family for three generations.
From Fez, a private vehicle takes you southeast through the Middle Atlas mountains and the cedar forests of Azrou before the landscape flattens and the air dries into the pre-Saharan south. By the time you reach Merzouga, the dunes of Erg Chebbi are turning amber in the late afternoon sun. You'll mount a camel at dusk, ride into the desert, and spend the night in a furnished camp under a sky with no light pollution and no noise except wind.
The final stretch brings you to Marrakech, chaotic and beautiful in equal measure. The Djemaa el-Fna square shifts from a juice market by day to a circus of storytellers, musicians, and smoke from a hundred grills by night. A morning cooking class teaches you to layer a proper tagine before you're set loose in the souks for an afternoon of leather, lamps, and negotiation.
